Ecological Existentialism

It is possible, dear reader, that you have found this and the year is approaching 2074. I hope it is not with disdain that you look back on a generation whose actions disproportionately impacted your life

We are in the waning age of the second industrial revolution and on the dawn of the third. The slow transition from the second industrial revolution to the third industrial revolution, however,  has come at great cost. We are careening toward a climate catastrophe. Our wanton use of fossil fuels is literally warming the globe. It is a mistake on a vast scale created by humans that is simultaneously barely even comprehensible by humans.

We are plunging deeper into the absurd. But don’t blame me. I long for a brighter future

We are currently in the midst of what can only be called a moment of ecological existentialism. The angst of a rapidly changing climate is building. A few are waking up but no one seems to know what to do or where our actions will lead us.

But you, dear reader, know exactly where this leads.

I ask not to be disavowed for my participation in a society that contributed to the world of ecological injustice that will be inherited by my own children but at least acknowledged for my efforts to curb it, capture it and write about it.

As I advocate for a sustainable future and one of ecological and climate justice I live in a society supported by fossil fuels in an economic system of abundance on a planet defined by scarcity.

Even if it is an unrelenting and futile task suitable for Sisyphus I will continue to search for meaning and gladly ignore Camus’ advice.

It is important now.
